Community Service Officer

A person comes home from work and discovers that his or her house has been broken into. Lots of items are missing, and a suspect is not in the house. A call goes to the San Jose Police Department which sends a Community Service Officer (CSO) assigned to the area.

As a CSO, you have gone through Police Academy training and are an expert in procedures and policies. You know how to dust for fingerprints, canvass an area, find evidence, take statements and do a report on a crime scene. You also can direct traffic in the event of a crash or set up a post to protect a crime scene. You are an important part of the San Jose Police Department, often working alongside patrols and even the fire department.

Most of all, you directly serve the community in a safe manner. You don’t carry weapons, make detentions, arrests or any other enforcement.
